Oversharing…
People may have trouble with oversharing for different reasons. They may have trouble with executive function skills like impulse control. Or they may have trouble with social skills and low self-esteem. Some people overshare to get attention or look cool. There are ways to avoid oversharing and manage the symptoms that may cause it.
Here are some tips to help someone minimize oversharing:
Create guidelines for what information is safe to share and what isn’t. Be clear: No talking about family matters, health issues, sexual issues, or other people’s personal business.
Talk and think about consequences. Consider what’s at stake when a person overshares. For example, a person might embarrass themselves or someone else. They might also lose friends or open themselves up to bullying.
It can be hard to process and filter out all of our thoughts, but if we are oversharing on a consistent basis, there could be more at play. If you or your child is struggling with oversharing we can help.
