Are you feeling overwhelmed with everyday life? Is drama with your family or friends making you anxious all the time? Or are you the parent of a teen who is struggling with the transition from a kid to a full-fledged adult?

Maybe you’re a teen who is feeling the strain of trying to balance academics, your social life, extracurriculars, and family obligations. It could be that you’re struggling to fit in at school. Perhaps you feel down all the time and you’re not sure why you aren’t happy.

Or you might be a parent who is concerned for your teen. Maybe their grades are getting worse or they are withdrawing from social activities. Perhaps your child’s behavior leaves you confused. They might handle certain things well but struggle in other areas. In the end, you might throw your hands up and feel like you just don’t know how to help.

If you’re a teen or the parent of a teen who needs some extra support, Monarch Behavioral Health offers counseling services that can provide you with new coping skills, parenting tips, and an atmosphere of unconditional acceptance.

Reasons Why You Might Consider Counseling

As a teen, counseling might not be something you’ve thought of before, but there are many different reasons people seek out a supportive therapist. These can include things like:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Self-harm or suicidal thoughts

  • Trauma

  • Grief and loss

  • Behavioral concerns

  • Family problems

  • Self-esteem concerns

  • Bullying

  • Peer pressure

  • Identity concerns, including gender and sexuality

  • Alcohol or substance abuse

  • Disordered eating

Our therapists are skilled at navigating these issues with teens. We can support you as you deal with the pain of your past and help you develop a plan to move forward with confidence.

Many Teens Struggle With The Process Of Self-Discovery

The teenage years are a time of self-discovery. For many teens, figuring out who they are and what they want from life can be extremely difficult. If they’re navigating complex issues such as gender identity, sexuality, religion, or anything that contradicts their family’s beliefs and ideation, it can make the process even harder.

You may feel alone in your pain, but it’s not uncommon for adolescents to experience mental health issues. In fact, research shows that 1 in 6 teens have a mental health disorder. If you’re a teen who’s struggling with anxiety, depression, or any other issues, therapy can help you find a way to lead an authentic life.

For Your Teen, The Pressure To Keep Up Can Be Daunting

Teens also feel the pressure that comes from outside sources. There is pressure to keep up in school, be the best at sports, and have their futures figured out. There is also pressure from friends to fit in or engage in risky behavior. Little wonder, then, that so many teens struggle with anxiety, depression, and a myriad of other mental health conditions.

If your teen is struggling to have it all figured out, therapy can help them find ways to stand on their own two feet, reduce their stress levels, and experience peace of mind.

Counseling Can Support You Through The Ups And Downs Of The Teen Years

As counselors, we understand your teen years can be tough. After all, we were teens ourselves, so we can relate to your struggles. We’re here to support you through the tough times and give you tools to help you live your best life.

We recognize that it may feel strange or even scary to talk about sensitive topics with your therapist, especially when you’re just starting out with counseling. We’re willing to talk about these issues at your own pace and at your own comfort level. The goal is to help you find clarity and direction so you don’t have to turn to less reliable sources like social media or your friends for answers.

What To Expect

Counseling usually begins with a very laid back get-to-know-you process. We want to build a positive relationship with you so you feel comfortable talking to us about the difficulties you’re experiencing.

If you’re the parent of a teen that’s struggling, but you and your teen aren’t sure what next steps to take, our team can also provide psychological testing services. We offer comprehensive tests for a variety of concerns, allowing you to truly understand your child's unique mental health or educational needs.

At Monarch Behavioral Health, we understand the pressure you’re facing as a teen and we want you to feel comfortable when you’re meeting with us. Therapy is a safe place for you to find understanding and learn strategies to help you succeed socially, academically, and in every area of your life.

Therapy Individualized For Your Needs

Our therapists will ask you a variety of questions and listen to you while you discuss the concerns that are bringing you to counseling. We may ask you about your past and help you examine what is possibly contributing to your current troubles. Then we will provide you with a variety of tools to help you better deal with the challenges you’re experiencing and help you build your self-confidence.

We don’t have a one-size fits all approach. You are a unique individual and we are here to support you, however that might look. It’s possible for you to overcome challenges and leave therapy equipped with the coping skills you need to take life head on.

But You May Still Have Concerns About Counseling For Teens…

Will what I say to my therapist be confidential?

We want you to feel comfortable, and we know part of that means knowing that the things you say won’t be shared outside of sessions. We don’t share the intimate details of your session with anyone, not even your parents. The only time a therapist will share details is if they feel you’re a danger to yourself or others, and even then the goal of sharing information is to make sure you get the help you need.

My teen is struggling, and as a parent I want to stay informed on how they’re doing.

Therapy with your teen is confidential, but since you’re the parent and you’re with them every day of the week, we want you to be involved in the process at every step. During intake, we will meet with you to hear your perspective on how things are going. We will always make you aware of any concerns about safety we may have. And throughout the process, we will meet with you frequently to understand how you think therapy is going and how things are going at home.

I think I need help, but I’m not sure I want to come to a therapist's office.

We want you to have access to therapy wherever you’re most comfortable. We offer in-person visits at our San Antonio office, and we offer telehealth visits if you’re more comfortable talking to someone from your own home.
