Coping With Depression

Like with most approaches to bettering our mental health, there’s no one size fits all when it comes to coping with depression. You may need to try a few different ways of managing your depression before something sticks. Here are things you can do:

  • Stay Connected: When we have depression, it can feel natural to pull away from others and isolate. Be sure to reach out to others purposely and often. Human connection plays an essential role in our mental health and in overcoming depression.

  • Do Things that Make You Happy: While you can’t force yourself to have fun, you can try to push yourself to do things, even when you don’t feel like it. You might be surprised at how much better you feel once doing them.

  • Move Your Body: When we’re depressed, getting out of bed can seem impossible, let alone working out! But exercise is a powerful depression fighter—and one of the most important tools in our recovery arsenal!

  • Get Some Sunlight: Sunlight can help boost serotonin levels and improve your mood. Be sure to get outside for at least 30 minutes a day! Talk to a Therapist: If you are not already, you might consider seeing a therapist. Therapists can help you work things like this. You are not alone.
