Preparing for Back to School

Back to school season is right around the corner! This time of year can bring up bouts of separation anxiety which can be difficult for both the child and the parent. Whether it is your child’s first day at school or daycare, here are a few tips to help you prepare.

  1. Build excitement about the first day back. You might consider arranging a playdate ahead of time so that your little one can meet their classmates beforehand which allows them to see familiar faces on the first day.

  2. Review the schedule. Be sure to tell your child about the activities of the day ... “I’ll drop you off, you will have free play, then story time.”

  3. Create a goodbye routine - kisses, hugs, and words of encouragement.... “I can’t wait to hear about your day.”

  4. Resist long goodbyes and get out of there! The longer you stay, the more difficult leaving can become for you and your child. After the routine head out!

  5. Reunite - after the day, talk about the positives. “What was the best part of your day?”
