How to Cope With Changes In Friendship

Friendships can be challenging. at any age. It can be just as difficult just to manage our child’s expectations of what friendships look like. If you have a child whose friendships are starting to shift, that’s okay! Here are 5 things you can do to help them cope with the change:

  1. Explain to them that not all friendships are meant to last forever.

  2. Combating jealousy can be tricky when it comes to a group of friends. Your child may become possessive of one friend. Explain to them that friendship is something that comes in abundance. There is enough of everyone.

  3. As friendships start to fade, your child might feel sad or lonely. That’s common. Comfort them by letting them know that they are not alone.

  4. Finding a balance will come with time. In the meantime, encourage them to try things and to meet new people.

  5. Set Expectations:  Maybe there was a reason for the split. Talking to your child about expectations and boundaries  can help them set their own  boundaries in the future.

If your child is struggling to deal with a shifting friendship, we can help.
