Self Injury Awareness Day

Self- injury Awareness Day is a globally recognized campaign held annually on March 1st. The purpose is to remove the stigma surrounding self-injury and to encourage parents, family members, educators, and healthcare professionals to recognize the signs of self harm.

Self- injury is defined as intentionally inflicting damage to one’s body in ways that are non-suicidal and not sanctioned by one’s culture. This can include anything from cutting the skin with sharp instruments, and burning of the skin to the breaking of one’s bones. It can occur anywhere on the body, though the arms, wrists, thighs and stomach are the most common areas.

While self- harm is not an inherently suicidal act, if the underlying cause of self- harm goes unaddressed, it may lead to suicidal behavior. Because of this, it is essential for family members, friends, educators and medical professionals to recognize these signs and help  individuals cope with non-judgmental support and treatment.

If you or someone you love are showing signs of self-injury, we can help.
