the new way to school (or unschool) your child…

Time spent with distance learning and homeschooling looks different than it would in class room setting.

The number of hours your child spends at-home schooling depends on your child’s age. Some days may look different too – the family may “feel it” more days than others. Be flexible.

Children need frequent breaks between academic tasks – try active tasks such as a walk or jumping jacks.

Every child and family system is different. Some children will require redirection during class. Some children may be able to work independently while others may need an adult in the room to help redirect to learning.⠀
❖⠀
Hands on Learning at Home. Parents and caregivers may want to take advantage of some hands-on learning opportunities at home to reinforce material learned in class. For instance, baking requires reading a recipe, measuring, and some math.⠀
❖⠀
Individual Check-Ins with distant learning teachers to reinforce learning online.⠀
❖⠀
Make Time for Fun. It can be easy to fall into the “parent as teacher” trap. Separate parenting and teaching as much as possible. Parents and caregivers may ensure the child completes academic tasks while maintaining the relationship as a parent. Have a space or room dedicated as an academic place. Be sure to interact with your child nonacademically by playing a game or going for a treat.⠀
❖⠀
Self-Care for Parents. It is difficult to assist with online learning and work from home. Parents and caregivers should ensure they take care of their own needs as well with a strong self-care plan.⠀
❖⠀
This all sounds like a TON of planning. Join groups online and reach out to your support group, if you feel like you do not have one – create one – there are other parents out there that feel the same way!⠀
❖⠀
When you feel like you need professional help, reach out. There are resources available for you - - parent coaching may be your biggest advocate. We are in this together.
